SUBJECT: National
Osteogenesis Imperfecta Awareness Week Proclamation
To Whom It May Concern,
I became aware of the OI
Foundation and OI Awareness week by way of 18year old Katie Petro who suffers
from Osteogenesis Imperfecta.
As a concerned citizen of this
country, and a supporter of the Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation, I would like to request that you, along with
mayors, representatives, senators, and governors from across the United States,
issue a proclamation declaring May 5-May 12th, 2018 as National OI Awareness
Week.
Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) is
a genetic bone disorder characterized by fragile bones that break easily. It is
also known as “brittle bone disease.
Volunteers are joining the
Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation, the only voluntary national health
organization dedicated to helping people cope with the problems associated with
osteogenesis imperfecta, to promote May 5- May 12th, 2018 as National OI
Awareness Week. These efforts will improve the quality of life for people with osteogenesis
imperfecta by increasing the awareness of this rare disease among the public,
media, government, and medical communities.
Below is suggested language for
the National OI Awareness Week proclamation:
Whereas, Osteogenesis Imperfecta
(OI) is a genetic disorder characterized by fragile bones that break easily. It
is also known as “brittle bone disease.” A person is born with this disorder
and is affected throughout his or her lifetime;
Whereas, there are different
types of OI with a range of severity from mild to life threatening;
Whereas, because there is no
cure for OI, treatment focuses on minimizing fractures, the surgical correction
of deformity, reducing bone fragility, maximizing mobility and independent
function;
Whereas, increased funding for
education and research are needed to help find more effective treatments;
Whereas, the Osteogenesis
Imperfecta Foundation is declaring May 5 - May 12th, 2018 to be National OI
Awareness Week, board members, staff, medical professionals, and volunteers are
joining together to focus attention on OI in an effort to increase awareness;
Therefore, I, Governor of the
state of Ohio do hereby proclaim May 5- May 12th, 2018 as National OI Awareness
Week in Ohio in support of the Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation’s efforts to
raise awareness of this rare disorder.
Please send a copy of the
proclamation directly to the OI Foundation-804 W Diamond Ave, Suite 210-
Gaithersburg, MD 20878 (or dcymber@oif.org).
Sincerely,
